Casino coming to Quinte

BELLEVILLE – A casino is officially coming to the Quinte area.

Earlier in September, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming commission gave British Columbia’s Great Canadian Gaming the right to operate a new site in Belleville or Quinte West.

As part of the deal, Great Canadian Gaming will also operate Casino Thousand Islands and the slots at Kawartha Downs.

Despite media reports on Tuesday, the city’s manager of approvals, Spencer Hutchison, says although it looks like the casino will be in Belleville, it’s not a guarantee.

OLG representative Tony Bitonti told QNet News that there are a few more steps to take before construction of the casino can begin in either Belleville or Quinte West.

“Before any shovels hit the ground, we need approval from the service provider, the municipality and the OLG,” he said.

He added that after approval is reached from those three parties, the government of Ontario will need to approve the build as well.

More to come.
